Whether you call them bluegill,bream,brim,panfish or sunfish these small tasty fish are fun to catch for anglers of all ages. We did some research and came up with the best bluegill lake of each of the lower 48 states.

Alabama- Lake Tuscaloosa is a big lake outside of the city of Tuscaloosa. It is just under 6,000 acres and is full of hand size bream.

Arizona- Sahuarita Lake is the smallest lake on the list at just 10 acres. It is located in Pima county and is very popular for taking kids to catch some nice bluegill.

Arkansas- Lake Wihelmina is a smaller lake just 300 acres and near Mena. It is loaded with other species of panfish that the bluegill get over looked and grow to nice eater sizes.

California- Whiskeytown Lake is a nice size lake over 3,000 acres in Shasta County. Bluegill are very abundant and grow above average size.

Colorado- Bonny Lake is a very popular lake outside of Idalia. It is just under 2,000 acres and is a hot spot for anglers looking to fill their buckets with keeper bluegill

Connecticut- Candlewood Lake is a big popular lake near Danbury. With almost 90 miles of bluegill fishing shoreline it is a top destination for anglers looking for hand size bluegill.

Delaware- Diamond Pond is a small body of water of only 40 acres. For a New England state the bluegill grow big here.

Florida- Lake Osborne Smaller lesser know lake that gets no recognition because of the bass lakes around. This lake is full of large bluegill most likely because of the presence of hybrid striped bass.

Georgia- Lake Sinclair is a large lake over 14,000 miles and also is another big bluegill lake that has hybrid striped bass that help control the smaller panfish in it. This allows some of the bluegill to reach record size.

Idaho- Manns Lake is a smaller lake under 30 acres and located near Lewiston. Not many bluegill fishermen in Idaho but the few that do know all about Manns Lake.

Illinois- Petite Lake is just under 200 acres and the bluegill have many predators like pike,bass and walleye controlling their numbers. This is why there are so many keeper bluegill available

Indiana- Big Lake a smaller lake near 230 acres located close to Columbia City. This lake is nit know by most anglers but the bluegill fishing is rated excellent with many 8-9 inches present

Iowa- East Okoboji Lake is located in Dickson county and just under 2000 acres. Bluegill run big here with many of the smaller ones being controlled by the pike and bass.

Kansas- Toronto Lake is in Woodson county and under 3,000 acres in size. Many hand sized bluegill are present and the smaller bluegill are controlled by the walleye and bass.

Kentucky- Herrington Lake a lesser know lake than some of the monster lakes Kentucky has is a hidden gem for bluegills. Large numbers and big hand sized gills cover this lake.

Louisiana- Clear Lake is an average size lake just under 1,500 acres and close to Mansfield. This lake has many predators controlling the bluegill numbers and allowing for massive growth

Maine- Worthley Pond popular fishing hole that holds some state record for other species of panfish also holds some very nice hand size bluegill

Maryland- Steamers Run Reservoir is a very small lake under 100 acres and near Earleville that brings in the anglers looking to fill their buckets with big gills

Massachusetts- Indian Lake is a smaller lake in Worcester County that is full of trophy bluegill. It is just over 200 acres so it is a perfect lake to take kids on their first trip

Michigan- Maple Lake is just under 200 acres and located in Van Burn county just outside of Paw Paw. Large bluegill are caught through out the year. Bluegill ice fishing is very popular on Maple Lake

Minnesota- Big Wolf Lake is an average size lake just over 1,000 acres and pretty deep near 60 feet at max. The gills are huge here and are caught during ice fishing and through out the summer.

Mississippi- Lake Perry is a smaller lake at just 125 acres in size and located in Perry County. It is a forgot lake due to all the crappie lakes but it is loaded with trophies

Missouri- Mozingo Lake- 1000 acre lake near Maryville has many panfish anglers coming here every year for the shot at the nice bluegill swimming in it

Montana- Lake Josephine is a tiny little lake in Billings and for the few panfishermen in Montana it is the capital of bluegill fishing

Nebraska- Willow Creek this 700 acre body of water is loaded with tastie large bluegill. Striped bass and northern pike keep the small bluegill in check and allowing for exceptional growth for the ones not heated

Nevada- Jiggs Reservoir is a small body of water under 50 acres near Elko. It is more known for trout but the bluegill present here is well worth the trouble.

New Hampshire- Spofford Lake is a clear cool water lake near Chesterfield. Many bluegill inhabit this lake any many grow to 8-9 inches

New Jersey- Pavin Lake is a small lake under 100 acres in Pittsgrove. Not well known for bluegill statewide but the gills grow huge here.

New Mexico- Brantley Lake is a big 4,000 acre lake that is very popular for hand sized bluegill. Not many small ones due to the walleye and bass population

New York- Artist Lake is a quiet little 30 acre lake near Brookheaven. It has many fallen trees and other hiding places that allow the bluegill to grow large.

North Carolina- Falls Lake is a very busy lake near Wake Forest. If you can fight through all the boat traffic the bluegill fishing is excellent

North Dakota- Lake ilo a average size lake near Dunn Center is just over 1200 acres in size. Bluegill ice fishing is some of the best in the state

Ohio- Salt Fork- Big lake outside of Cambridge is full of 8-10 inch gills. It still holds the state record bluegill over 3lbs caught back in the 70’2. Saugeye and musky keep the numbers down and the growth of gills excellent

Oklahoma- Lower Mountain Fork River is a beautiful stream more known for trout but if you find that perfect hole the bluegill are exceptional

Oregon- Rock Creek Reservoir is a man made reservoir under 90 acres and near Wamic. Very quiet but full of impressive hungry bluegill

Pennsylvania- Yellow Creek is a beautiful scenic trout creek that is full of keeper bluegill. Fly fishing for bluegill in this creek is highly popular.

Rhode Island- Olney Pond is a nice 300 acre lake just outside of Lincoln. It is only about 15 feet deep at its max and is well known to be an excellent bluegill lake with many 7-9 inches caught regularly

South Carolina- Clark’s Hill Lake is a huge deep lake near Augusta. The bluegill in the lake are some of the biggest in the state. The population is high and they are easily caught most of the year

South Dakota- Angostura Reservoir is a big 5000 acre lake that is very deep in spots. The population of bluegill is not to high but the size of them is above average. The pike help keep their numbers down so they can grow large

Tennessee- Great Falls Lake is a big lake over 3,000 acres and located in Warren County. The wooded shoreline and rocky points allow finding big schools of hand size bluegill easy here

Texas- Lake McQueeney is around 400 acres and is in Guadalupe county. Not well know because of the huge bass lakes but this lake has large bluegill some reports close to 10 inches in size

Utah- Pineview Reservoir is a beautiful lake in the middle-class of the mountains near Odgen. Not to much obvious structure to locate bluegill but once you find them you will be happy with the sizes.

Vermont- Lake Bomoseen is a nice size lake just under 2500 acres. It is near Fair Haven and it is where all the bluegill fishermen head especially during ice fishing season.

Virginia- Bribery Creek Lake is just under 1000 acres and is loaded with huge bluegill. Bass in this lake are huge some over 10 pounds and those big boys can handle keeping the little ones down

Washington- Silver Lake is known more for their trout but the bluegill population is huge. Many 7-9 inch gills are caught every year.

West Virginia- Dog run Lake is located out in the middle of the woods near Salem. Bluegill are over looked by trout fishermen many times but this just helps them grow to big sizes

Wisconsin- Boom Lake is located in Oneida County and is over 2,000 acres. Many predator fish are present in this lake that feed on bluegill daily. The ones that survive are trophies.

Wyoming- Boysen Reservoir is a huge body of water near 20,000 acres. Deep lake with some points helps find some of the big schools of gills swimming around
